Grading System
Achievement is reported by numerical grades. Letter grades are used for physical education courses.
Scale Report Card Codes Progress Report Codes
A+ = 95-100 COM = Complete U = Unsatisfactory
A = 90-94 EX = Excused F = Failing
B+ = 85-89 P = Passing IP = Improved Performance
B = 80-84 SS = Summer School
C = 75-79 WP = Withdraw Passing
D = 70-74 WF = Withdraw Failing
F = less than 70 INC = Incomplete
Transfer Students
The courses, grades, and credits for students who transfer to AHA will be shown on transcripts but will not be included in our Holy Angels averages or GPA.
Senior Exam Examinations
Seniors are exempt from the June examinations in a particular subject if they meet all of the following criteria:
90% unweighted average for the year (add quarters 1, 2, 3, and 4 and multiply by 2 then add the midyear exam grade. Divide this total by 9)
- Have had no more than:
- 10 absences for the year for any reason
- 6 lates for the year
- 6 early leaves for the year
NOTE: The Dean of Students will notify students of exemptions by posting a master list in each senior homeroom. For the purpose of senior exam exemptions early leavings will be counted separately from absences.
Statement of Class Rank
AHA does not rank.
Course Multipliers and Credits
College-Preparatory (CP) (1.00 multiplier)
Honors (H) (1.03 multiplier)
High Honors (HH) (1.06 multiplier)
Advanced Placement (AP) (1.07 multiplier)
Credit is awarded as follows: 5.0 for a full year course
2.5 for a semester course
1.25 for a quarter course and Physical Education (PE)
Grade Point Averages (GPA’s)
All courses except for PE, Community Service, and any Summer School course are used to calculate a yearly and cumulative unweighted and weighted GPA.
- Final, yearly course GPA’s are weighted using the appropriate multipliers and credits.
- For each valid course, perform the following:
- Final Grade x Multiplier x Credits = Quality Points (QP)
- Total all QP’s for all courses taken that year (except those indicated above)
- Divide Total QP’s by Total Credits and you get the Yearly Weightetd GPA.
- To get the Cumulative Weighted GPA, perform the above calculations for each academic year.
- Final, yearly course unweighted GPA’s are calculated using the appropriate credits.
- For each valid course, perform the following:
- Final Grade x Credits = Quality Points (QP)
- Total all QP’s for all courses taken that year (except those indicated above)
- Divide Total QP’s by Total Credits and you get the Yearly Unweighted GPA.
- To get the Cumulative Unweighted GPA, perform the above calculations for each academic year.
- Cumulative, Weighted GPA’s are calculated five times during high school: at the end of 9th (second semester), 10th (fourth-semester), 11th (sixth semester), and 12th (eighth semester). In addition, as required by colleges and universities, a 7th semester average is also calculated. This average is sent to all colleges as part of a required college admissions ‘Mid-Year Report’.
- For purposes of admission to NHS, cumulative, weighted GPA’s are also calculated after the 5th semester of 11th grade and the 7th semester of 12th grade.
Note for transfer students: Cumulative Weighted and Unweighted GPA’s are calculated using only courses taken at AHA.
Honor Roll and Principal’s List
The Honor Roll and Principal’s List for each quarter will be based upon the unweighted numerical average of all quarter grades.
Principal’s List 95-100 and B or higher in PE
Honor Roll 90-94 and B or higher in PE
A failing grade in any subject will disqualify a student. Furthermore, a violation of the Honesty Policy will disqualify a student from the Honor Roll and Principal’s List in the quarter in which the violation occurred.
National Honor Society
The student who qualifies academically has a cumulative weighted GPA of 92% including exam grades. The required average cannot be attained by rounding up. A 91.9 cumulative weighted GPA will not meet the criteria.
If the student has transferred to AHA, her cumulative weighted GPA as reported by her former high school at the time of the transfer also must have been greater than or equal to 92%. If previous grades are reported to AHA on a different grading scale, the Principal will make the final qualifying decision.
