Comprehensive COOP Review for Mathematics

This course will provide extensive review in the mathematical section only of the COOP exam. In addition to reviewing arithmetic, number theory and problem solving, students will measure academic achievement through sample practice tests given in class.

Dyeing to Knit

Ms. Peña our own published knitter (Vogue Knitting) will teach students how to dye their yarn and knit items using simple knit and purl stitches. There is a $30.00 cost for materials in addition to the course fee.
Magic in the Lab

Explore the physical world around you with hands on laboratory experiments in biology, chemistry and physics, You will isolate DNA, discover the lifting power of helium, create colorful red, purple, and green flames, change copper pennies into “gold” and change white carnations to multicolored without touching a petal! Students will use computer technology in a Chemistry scavenger hunt for unusual elements and make the invisible ink used in National Treasure! There is a $12 fee for supplies in addition to the course fee.

Painting with Many Mediums

Let’s paint and have fun! Students will explore a variety of painting mediums, including watercolor, watercolor pencils and tempera. Each day students will complete a new project, including pictures, masks and even painting with sunlight! Students should bring their own smock to class. Limited to 7 students. There is a fee of $10 for supplies in addition to the course fee.
Hollywood Angels: Lights, Camera, Action!

Session I & II, Afternoon
In this week-long course, students will explore the steps required to make a short (5-10 minute) film in which every girl will act, write, direct and produce. Students will begin each film as a blank page, brainstorming the genre and events and collaboratively writing the script. Acting and character exercises will be practiced to prepare each student for her performance on screen. Next, we will plan our film shoot using storyboards before filming the movie on the AHA campus. After making collective decisions on how to edit and score the film, we will have a final screening for family and friends to attend. This class provides a hands-on, fun and educational learning experience about the largest film industry in the world and will give expression to students’ creativity. For anyone who ever wanted to be in movies or wondered what it’s like to be behind the camera.
Summerfare Sculpture

Students will sculpt two projects during the week. Using wire and a flexible transparent film, which looks like stained glass, students will assemble a free Standing Sculpture, which may be seen from any angle. Students will also create a Transparent Hanging Sculpture by assembling hanging shapes like stars and circles using paint and paper to hang from windows or lights. There is a fee of $10 for supplies in addition to the course fee.

Black and White Photography

Students will learn the procedures for developing black and white film and prints. Students must have their own working 35 millimeter film camera with new batteries to take photos. There is a $35 fee for supplies in addition to the course fee.

Page to Stage: Writing and Acting for the Stage
Mr. J. Burklund
In this two-week long course we will explore what it takes to construct an entertaining live theatrical performance. Starting with improvisation and writing exercises, we’ll find what genre and plot ideas spark our interest and collaboratively create the written material of our play. For the remaining week and a half we’ll divide our time between rehearsals for our final performance and developing our acting skills through games and exercises. After creating the staging of the play and adding in final details of costumes, props, and music the class will culminate in a final presentation for friends and family to enjoy.

Pinhole Photography
Ms. J. Lee
Students will take black and white photos using their homemade pinhole cameras. They will learn the process of creating negatives and transferring them into positive prints. There is a $25 fee for supplies in addition to the course fee.
