Alumna Returns to AHA to Speak About Her Role as a Media Lawyer
December 2013
Dorianne Van Dyke '01 visited Mrs. Schneberger’s Communications class recently to discuss her experience as a media lawyer. Ms. Van Dyke currently works as an attorney for the Media Law Resource Center and Dow Jones. Prior to her current position, she worked at Newsweek and the website, The Daily Beast where she advised journalists on different topics, from how to avoid defamation to how to deal with different legal issues that arise out of social media use. As a young woman in the Communications field, she wanted to be taken seriously. “I went above and beyond to show I was serious.” She advised the students that success is about “networking and forming good relationships with people in the workplace.” Reflecting on her years at Holy Angels, Ms. Van Dyke said, “The all-girl environment encouraged my confidence and increased my sense of self.” She discussed issues such as cyber bullying and defamation lawsuits and answered questions from the students. Students were curious about the typical workday of a media lawyer and the preparation required for such a field.
