AHA Benefit Honors Teacher’s Battle with Breast Cancer

Demarest, NJ: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to reflect on loved ones who have survived their battles, and those we have lost. This is also a time to take action by raising funds for research and pledging to fight on. The Academy of the Holy Angels Varsity Soccer Team promised “We Play to Fight On” in their second annual match in memory of Holy Angels’ beloved business and technology teacher Karen Sullivan Camporeale. All proceeds were donated to the Karen Camporeale Fund, which was established by her family.

The benefit soccer match against Paramus was held on the turf field on Friday, October 4th. Supporters from the AHA community and from Paramus purchased T-shirts emblazoned with “We Play to Fight On.” AHA Athletic Director Patti Gorsuch reported that every T-shirt was sold. Proceeds from the T-shirt sales went directly to the Karen Camporeale Fund, as did the donations made by spectators during the afternoon game.

“We raised over $2,300, which is fantastic,” Gorsuch said. “All in all, it was a beautiful day, and a beautiful way to remember our special soccer fan: Karen.”

Camporeale (AHA ’88) was president of the AHA Alumnae Association at the time of her passing in May 2018. Her daughters also chose to attend AHA for their high school years.

AHA Varsity Soccer Head Coach Bill Potkulski and Assistant Coach Sean Liddy were the driving forces behind the initial soccer fundraiser, which was held in October 2018. Potkulski and Liddy also created the #Team_Camp to show support for the Camporeale family.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
