AHA CAMPUS RENOVATIONS: EXCITEMENT IS BUILDING!

Demarest, NJ: Excitement is building at the Academy of the Holy Angels, where two major renovations that include centerpiece STREAM and Mac labs, are now reaching imminent completion. These upgrades will provide additional space and state-of-the-art equipment to enhance AHA’s STREAM curriculum, which encompasses science, technology, religion, engineering, art, and mathematics.

In early October, AHA officials and Bishop John Flesey will preside over the dedication of Kelleher Hall. Originally the school’s convent, this building has undergone several metamorphoses to meet the shifting needs of the AHA community since 1965. In its most modern incarnation, Kelleher Hall will feature two brand new art studios and an adjacent Mac Lab and two multi-purpose classrooms on the first level.Kelleher Hall

The new Mac Lab at Kelleher Hall will enhance and expand our digital design curriculum,” AHA Facilities & Technology Administrator George Ballane commented as the 2017-18 academic year was about to begin. “This year, we will be offering digital media design, a new class in video editing. The new lab will provide students with an opportunity to use the computers they need.”

Kelleher Hall’s second floor will be home to the school’s business offices, two conference rooms, and an SSND Heritage Suite and archive. This last project was a gift to the school from the School Sisters of Notre Dame, AHA’s founders and sponsors.

Launched in February, the renovation of Kelleher Hall was carried out with the help of a $1 million gift from an anonymous donor, who asked that the building be renamed Sister Genevieve Kelleher Hall. S. Genevieve, who was active at AHA between 1948 (when the campus was in Fort Lee) and 2011, is the longest-serving SSND at Holy Angels. She taught English, French, religion, biology, and history, and logged time as the librarian.

The AHA community anticipates that S. Genevieve will be on hand for the dedication ceremony.

A complementary renovation will soon result in a new STREAM Lab adjacent to Spola, an existing science lab within the main school building. This new lab will be used for engineering and architecture and will include a small digital design area. At least one of the school’s two 3-D printers and a 3-D scanner will be located in this space.

This lab will be furnished with a large, touch-screen television that will allow teachers to write notes directly on the screen as they make presentations. In addition, the STREAM Lab will be used for extra-curricular activities that involve engineering and robotics.

“The ceiling grid was inspired by engineering concepts and will allow students to see some of the works of the building exposed overhead,” Ballane said of the STREAM Lab, noting that this salient design feature is likely to become a talking point for teachers.

These projects represent many hours of study, communication with the school community, and work with DiCara/Rubino Architects and Vanas Construction. All of the renovation work has been completed within the school’s existing footprint.

Since 1879, thousands of women have passed through the portals of Academy of the Holy Angels high school, the oldest private girls’ school in New Jersey. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. Our goal is to provide each girl with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and giving service to others.
