AHA Cellist and Her Trio Win International Competition

Demarest, NJ: Palisades Park resident Erin Yang played the piano for three years and flute for two years before she decided to pick up a cello nine years ago. Her devotion to the cello recently paid off as Yang and her piano trio, which includes violinist Hannah Jung and pianist Laura Gessmann, earned first prize in the Third Manhattan International Music Competition.

The trio has now been invited to perform at Bruno Walter Auditorium at New York’s Lincoln Center on January 13th.

“Erin is a fantastic musician, and I am very proud of her,” said Mariann Annecchino, who is Yang’s instrumental music teacher at the Academy of the Holy Angels.

Yang, who is also cellist in Holy Angels’ Tri-M String Quartet, reported that she became interested in the cello after viewing a televised orchestral performance.

“My teacher brought up the idea of entering a competition last year, so I signed up for Manhattan International Music Competition with my trio and started rehearsing a Beethoven piece called Drei Trios for Pianoforte, Violin, and Violincello, Op. 1. No. 3,” Yang noted. “The competition assigned each musician or group to record and hand in their recording. We rented out a recording studio and recorded ourselves playing it. We posted it on YouTube and sent the recording to the judges.”

At AHA, all eyes are now on this sophomore’s future endeavors.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in New Jersey. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
