AHA Freshman Named Reserve Champion at Equestrian Event

Demarest, NJ: Cassandra Beckmann, a freshman at the Academy of the Holy Angels, became Reserve Champion at Horses in the Sun Saugerties, a horse show held in upstate New York. Beckmann received this honor for winning or placing in different equestrian events, or “classes.”

“There are two types of classes: a ‘flat class’ and an ‘over fences’ class,” she explained. “A flat class usually involves six to eight horse and rider pairs all in one riding ring, being judged against each other. There is no jumping involved in a flat class, and there is only one per show.”

The over fences class involves one horse and rider at a time jumping a course set up in a ring, she added. There are several over fences classes held in one show, and each horse and rider pair earns a score. Ribbons are awarded to those with the best scores.
Although this Tuxedo, New York, resident has been riding horses for six years, this was her first experience at HITS.

“During the three weeks I was there, I learned how to work hard, and was up at 6 a.m. every day, cleaning horse stalls, feeding horses, filling water buckets, bathing horses, and, finally, riding horses,” she said, adding that she competed every weekend.

“I learned, as Colin Powell once said, ‘A dream does not become a reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work.’”

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
