AHA Marks 70th Anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Demarest, NJ: On the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Academy of the Holy Angels unveiled a special video made by the school community. At the request of AHA Director of Mission & Ministry Joan Connelly, AHA Social Media Manager Erin Musich filmed various individuals and groups reciting each of the declaration’s 30 articles.

The segments feature students, faculty members, and staff speaking multiple languages, including English, Italian, Greek, Tagalog, Korean, Polish, French, Spanish, Mandarin, Armenian, Hindi, Creole, Portuguese, and Arabic. The AHA Sign Language Club also presented one of the articles in American Sign Language.

Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was formulated after the end of World War II. It has been translated into approximately 500 languages.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
