AHA Marks Foundation Day

Demarest, NJ: The Academy of the Holy Angels recently marked Foundation Day with two celebrations.

The school community, led by AHA President Melinda Hanlon and Principal Jean Mullooly, marked the 1833 foundation of the School Sisters of Notre Dame with a visit from several SSNDs, including Sister Limétèze Pierre-Gilles. At that first event, AHA recognized multiple students who were recognized for their excellent performance on the PSAT/NMSQT, and announced the winners of the Sister Nonna Dunphy Scholarships.

Haitian-born Sister Limétèze Pierre-Gilles, who made her perpetual profession in June, gave the keynote address. In her insightful speech, she observed that the AHA community is washing the feet of the Haitian people through the school’s multiple fundraisers.

During the celebration, SSNDs Mary Kelly, Henrice Eckert, Justine Nutz,  Eileen Reilly, Carole Tabano, Mary Foley, Patricia Hammond, Kathleen Dunham, and Limétèze renewed their vows.A few days later, AHA celebrated the three SSNDs who work within the school: Sisters Mary Foley, Kathleen Dunham, and Carole Tabano. These educators were presented with multiple ribbons, all of which are decorated with student, faculty, and staff pledges of how each individual plans to live out the spirit of unity. The ribbons are now hanging in the Student Commons and are a reminder of this year’s school theme: “In unity is our strength.”

Since 1879, thousands of women have passed through the portals of Academy of the Holy Angels high school, the oldest private girls’ school in New Jersey. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts and athletics. Our goal is to provide each girl with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially and physically, by offering a first –rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity and giving service to others.
