AHA Scientists Team up to Judge Local STEM Fairs

Demarest, NJ: Teen science aficionados from the Academy of the Holy Angels recently teamed up to judge STEM Fairs at the Academy of Our Lady in Glen Rock, Saint Elizabeth’s in Wyckoff, and Our Lady of Mercy in Park Ridge.

The AHA judges assessed multiple entries after hearing the middle school students’ presentations and evaluating their responses to questions about each project. The judges then discussed their findings with educators from each school.

AHA math and engineering teacher Jing Loo recommended several student judges. This year’s group included Athena Cenname of Garnerville, New York; Jillian Busetto and Angelina Busetto of Pomona, New York; Alyssa Fiume of Saddle River; Gabrielle Layne of Upper Saddle River; Olivia Mandella of Montvale; Maya Sharma of River Vale; Amelia Brunda of Paramus; Clare Daughtry of Leonia; Joanna Hablitschek of Fort Lee; Kerry Limberg of Mahwah; Kym McGowan of Clifton; Kayla Pringle of Suffern, New York; Olivia Rettew of Teaneck; Sophia Shin of Cresskill; and Samantha Yoon of Nutley.

STEM Fair projects involve various aspects of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The Holy Angels STREAM curriculum builds upon the traditional STEM framework by incorporating religion and the arts.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
