AHA Students Chosen to
Speak at UN Conference

March 2014

Tuesday March 18th was an extremely exciting day for everyone at Holy Angels. What had begun as an assignment in Ms. Cucchisi’s International Studies class culminated in a trip to the United Nations for four of the students and an opportunity to address a session of the Commission on the Status of Women Conference.  The seeds for this assignment were sown back in October when Religious Studies teacher Ms. Carol Fay arranged for students to attend a summit at Caldwell College on human trafficking. This inspired seniors Jasmine McGlashan, Julianna Perez, Karen Suter and Noel Khamis, pictured below, to produce a powerful video on the subject for their International Studies class. The video circulated quickly on YouTube and was then featured in a School Sisters of Notre Dame newsletter.  Holy Angels was then invited by S. Eileen Reilly, SSND, who is a member of the Commission, to present the video to the Commission and to address its members.  Jasmine and Julianna were invited to speak for the group. Ms. Cucchisi expressed her excitement by noting that “they were the only student group invited to speak at this particular UN session thus, needless to say, this was a tremendous honor for the girls and we are so very proud of them." For Jasmine, “the experience was surreal as a member of Model UN at school, I couldn't believe that I was really speaking at the United Nations. It really showed me that this is what I want to pursue in the future. I feel so blessed to say that at 17 years old I did this."
