AHA Students Commemorate
World Smile Day
October 2013
Students at Holy Angels in Demarest commemorated World Smile Day® by sharing what makes them smile and by performing simple acts of kindness for each other. World Smile Day® was conceived by the late artist Harvey Ball, who created the iconic smiley face symbol in 1963 and who believed that one day a year should be dedicated to fostering goodwill and kindness. He is remembered as having said, "The smiley face knows no politics, no geography and no religion, and for at least one day each year, neither should we.”
This day held special significance for the Holy Angels community because of the involvement of many of its students in Operation Smile, a charitable organization dedicated to providing reconstructive surgery for children born with cleft palate and other facial deformities. Operation Smile was co-founded in 1982 by AHA alumna Kathy Soracco Magee. Over the past few years many students from Holy Angels have participated in OpSmile service trips all over the world serving in such places as The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, The Philippines and India. Op Smile Moderator Mrs. Laura Kraytem who organized today’s festivities, noted how closely they connected with AHA’s theme this year, “Love Cannot Wait”. “The simple act of smiling and showing kindness to another person cannot be overestimated.”
