Angels Earn Second Consecutive Bowling Title

Demarest, NJ: At the outset of the new bowling season, Academy of the Holy Angels Coach Patrick Dunne was not expecting a repeat of last year’s success. He had lost four starters from last year’s team, and the varsity and JV squads included 10 new bowlers. Dunne was in for a surprise: His team’s outstanding work ethic just yielded a second consecutive Bergen County championship title.

“The hard work that the girls put in at each practice, their belief in ‘team first,’ and the faith they have in each other led to our second consecutive county championship,” he said. “Coming into the county tournament, our league record was 8-1, so I knew that we would be competitive.”

During the challenge at Bowler City in Hackensack, the Angels pulled together and emerged first among 20 of Bergen County’s top teams. The Angels finished the competition by defeating a tough Ridgewood squad.

AHA’s championship team includes Co-captains Rebecca Sicat of Congers (NY), Alexa Hernandez of Spring Valley (NY), and Amelia Brunda of Paramus; and teammates Palak Hazrati of Little Ferry, Sarah Folk of Old Tappan, Brandi Glaser of Old Tappan, Isabelle Egan of Oradell, and Julie Zierer of Upper Saddle River.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
