Fashion Angels Convert Recyclable Paper Items into Couture

Demarest, NJ: Student fashionistas from the Academy of the Holy Angels have been converting recyclable paper materials into couture. In just one day, members of the club known as Fashion Angels created a three dress collection made from paper products ranging from plates to newsprint.

Although the students all began with mundane items, they quickly began to coax texture, volume, and style from “textiles” that, in some cases, literally include text.

“The girls wanted to use recycled materials to make clothing as seen on a popular TV reality show,” said AHA art teacher and club moderator Kathryn Biskup. “The students also felt this project would represent recycling and limiting waste, two goals of the School Sisters of Notre Dame,” Biskup said, referring to the Academy’s foundresses and sponsors.

Asked if the dresses could be worn, Biskup explained that they could be made ready to wear by carefully opening up a “seam” and enrobing a person in the garment. At the moment, however, the dresses are simply lovely examples of transformative art.

Now in its third year at AHA, Fashion Angels is led by Co-presidents Sofie Miles and Jacqueline Rubino. Upcoming projects will include “ugly Christmas sweaters” and a chance for students to sew their own crafts. Club members will also continue to design clothes and objects to be sold in the school store, the Clothes Closet.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
