Franciscan Sisters Receive the Gift of Art

Demarest, NJ: A group of young artists from the Academy of the Holy Angels recently delivered the gift of art to the Franciscan Sisters in Tenafly. Kathryn Biskup’s Art for the Community group fashioned a festive wreath and Christmas tree decoration for the sisters just in time for the holiday season.

Pictured with these seasonal gifts are Arda Hajjar of Englewood Cliffs; Emma DeMarco of South Nyack, New York; Melanie Meehan of Tappan, New York; and Molly Brooks of Chestnut Ridge, New York. These students are four freshmen from the current Art for the Community group.

Participants in Art for the Community meet at AHA during the school’s activity period with the aim of producing artistic creations to share with the greater community. In addition to making Christmas and Easter decorations for the Franciscan Sisters, the group distributes artworks to area nursing homes and hospitals.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
