‘Gift of Failure’ Author Jessica Lahey to Appear at Holy Angels

Demarest, NJ: New York Times best-selling author, educator, and acclaimed speaker Jessica Lahey will make a special appearance at the Academy of the Holy Angels on Thursday, March 28th at 6:30 p.m. Members of the public are invited to visit with Lahey, who will be speaking and signing her book, “The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed.” Coffee and dessert will be served, and copies of Lahey’s book will be available for purchase and signing.

Lahey is an internationally recognized expert on how parenting styles impact children. She wrote “The Gift of Failure” when she realized her students did not want to take risks in the classroom because they were afraid to make mistakes. In her book, Lahey discusses how parents can model intellectual and emotional bravery and provide more support, and less control, so children feel competent and valued. Along the way, Lahey says children should be allowed to experience failure so they can become resilient, self-reliant, and successful adults.

Lahey holds a Bachelor’s Degree in comparative literature from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and a Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a commentator on Vermont Public Radio, and her columns have appeared in The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and The New York Times.

Her appearance at Holy Angels is part of the Sustaining Excellence Colloquium, the capstone to the Academy’s Middle States self-study project, which centered on growth mindset. Lahey’s book is rooted in this concept, which was initially described by Dr. Carol S. Dweck. In part, growth mindset encourages individuals to view obstacles, and even failures, as chances to grow and learn.

The Academy of the Holy Angels is located at 315 Demarest, New Jersey. Those who attend Lahey’s book signing may enter through the event doors at the rear of the school.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
