DEMAREST, NJ — Academy of the Holy Angels students and faculty put the social values of their AHA education in motion during a week-long service trip to Salem, West Virginia, August 9th through August 15th.  On-site at Nazareth Farms, an electronically-free environment in economically depressed Appalachia, managed by college students and recent college graduates, AHA students were charged with helping to address some of the pressing issues of the region, namely sub-standard housing.

During their stay, students visited various locations in the area, offering hands-on home- building help to the poor and vulnerable.

From harvesting crops on the farm to helping to replace siding and painting homes in disrepair, participants shared a deep sense of community, simplicity, prayer and service, partnering with other SSND (School Sisters of Notre Dame) ministries.

For many participating,  it was a transformative life experience. AHA Class of 2016 senior Aine Doyle described it as a week of intense spiritual and emotional growth. Furthermore, it bolstered her awareness and  accountability of “how I use natural resources in my daily life.  At Nazareth Farms, we learned how profound the impact coal and natural gas have on the people and  businesses in the region.  While its plentiful in underground resources, sadly the people profit little from these resources…and the widespread poverty is very evident.”

For  more than 136 years,  the Academy of the Holy Angels, sponsored by  The School Sisters of Notre Dame, has been educating  young women from all religious backgrounds in a rigorous, college-preparatory program.  Located on a college-like campus,  AHA is a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence and a National  Service Learning Leader School that empowers young women to lead in academics,  arts,  athletics, spirituality, and service.  For more information, visit www.holyangels.org.
