Demarest, NJ —  The Academy of the Holy Angels Competitive Dance Team secured the National Championship Title in Small Varsity Hip Hop at the 2016 National Dance Team Championship(NDTC) which took place on January 29th through January 31st. at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. The team made history by also securing 4th place in Small Varsity Pom, 2nd place in JV Pom and 4th place in JV Hip Hop, collectively the highest placement ever achieved by a NJ Dance Team at NDTC.  The NDTC is administered by Universal Dance Association, a division of Varsity Spirit. The NDTC is the only national-level dance team championship that is endorsed by the National Federation of State High School Associations, the national service and administrative organization for high school athletics and fine arts programs in speech, debate, theater, and music.

The Holy Angels Dance Team began 5 years ago under the direction of Coach Jenny Sweet.  Ms Sweet is a Universal Dance Association Coach’s Award recipient, who began her training at the prestigious Seiskaya Ballet Academy in NY.  She earned her Dance degree from New York University and is a full-time dance faculty member at the Cicely Tyson Performing Arts School. Jenny choreographed award winning contemporary ballet pieces for the International Ballet Competition held in Varna, Bulgaria as well as three additional successful pieces for IBC and The Youth America Grand Prix. She coached the Holy Angels Dance Team to countless state and regional titles and a National Championship.  In 2014, with the growth of the program, Kristen Cebulski was added as a Junior Varsity Coach.  Miss Cebulski is a member of the Academy of the Holy Angels alumni, graduating in 2009. Kristen was captain of the dance team. As a junior, she danced on the 2008 Hip-Hop National Championship Team. She attended Ramapo College of New Jersey and received her bachelor's degree in Mathematics. She was also a member of the Ramapo College Dance Team and won two National titles with them. There are currently 26 girls on the team; 13 on Varsity and 13 on JV.

In order for the Team to compete at the National level they train all year round.  The team takes studio classes each week in Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary, Musical Theater and Technique in addition to boot camp style work outs.  The girls attend a UDA summer camp, do workshops throughout the summer and compete at UDA competitions from Virginia to NJ.  The commitment and work ethic instilled by the Academy of the Holy Angels serves this team well as they progress towards their ultimate goal each year, the National Dance Team Championship.  The competition attracts over 250 teams in varying categories from all over the United States.  In the Small Varsity Hip Hop category, the Holy Angels Dance Team ultimately outscored over 50 other teams to claim the title.  To then place 4th in Pom and have JV place 2nd in Pom and 4th in Hip Hop was truly above and beyond all expectations.

As dedicated as they are the team is right back at practice and getting ready for tryouts in April.  Coach Jenny Sweet has taken the Holy Angels Dance Team to the highest level in HS Dance and there is still more to come.  You may contact Jenny Sweet at jsweet@holyangels.org or Instagram @holyangelsdancenj.  There is no limit to what this team can achieve!
