Holy Angels Unveils Five New Achievement Awards

Demarest, NJ: Incoming freshmen at the Academy of the Holy Angels now have the opportunity to apply for five new achievement awards, each of which includes a $2,500 stipend. AHA Admissions Director Michèle McGovern, who announced the awards at the October Open House, noted that these scholarships were established to encourage members of the Class of 2024 to develop their talents in the areas of leadership, spirituality and service, fine arts, instrumental music, and vocal music.

Each applicant for the Leadership Award and the Spirituality and Service Award must be nominated by her school principal, guidance counselor, or eighth grade teacher. The person who provides the nomination should submit a letter that describes why the applicant is an ideal candidate for the award. Students must also submit a letter of recommendation from an individual who has supervised the applicant’s service or leadership endeavors. Students should describe their experience and submit an essay that addresses a series of questions posted on the AHA website,

The Leadership Award will be presented to an incoming freshman who demonstrates outstanding efforts in this area. AHA Dean of Students Andréa Beyer will evaluate the applications for this award.

The Spirituality and Service Award will be available to a student who demonstrates exemplary humility and compassion in serving others. AHA Director of Campus Ministry Kathleen Sylvester will oversee the application process for this award.

Students who excel in art will be invited to apply for the Fine Arts Award. Department Chair Jennifer Lee will consider applications for this grant. Students will be required to submit a portfolio consisting of JPEG photos taken with a digital camera. Each photo should be clearly labeled with the artist’s name and the title of the work. Portfolios must include four pieces of original, two- or three-dimensional artworks created without assistance.

Performing Arts Director Dan Mahoney will evaluate applications for the Music Award and the Vocal Award, which are two separate scholarships. Applicants for both of these grants must submit a signed letter of recommendation from their current music teacher that includes the student’s repertoire, years of study, practice habits, and musicianship.

In order to be eligible for the Music Award, applicants must submit digital video recordings of themselves playing various scales noted on the AHA website and a piece from the NYSSMA Manual that is at least Level IV.

Performers who apply for the Vocal Award should submit a video recording of themselves singing at least one of three pieces listed on the Academy’s website and a video of themselves performing a favorite Broadway song.

Applications for all five awards must be filed on or before December 1. Please visit and select the Admissions page for important details.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
