Ides of March Event Supports Teacher Training in Haiti

Demarest, NJ: Members of the National Latin Honor Society at the Academy of the Holy Angels have an unusual way of commemorating the March 15, 44 B.C. assassination of Julius Caesar. On the Ides of March, this clever group hosts “Pin the Dagger on the Caesar.”

Dozens of students lined up to join the festivities. Participants make a $1 donation, are presented with a paper “dagger,” blindfolded, spun around multiple times, and sent reeling toward a life-sized drawing of Caesar. Those who manage to find Caesar’s heart receive a colorful sticker of their choice.

Contributors also demonstrate the size of their own hearts, since proceeds from this year’s event will support training for teachers in Haiti. Adopt-a-Teacher is a School Sisters of Notre Dame initiative, and SSND-sponsored schools, including Holy Angels, are doing their part. The aim is to send teachers from Lagonav Island to Port-au-Prince for special courses.

AHA has already raised and donated $3,000 to send one teacher to Haiti’s capital. The school community is now working to amass funds to assist a second educator’s training.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
