Klett Literary Scholarship
October 2014
Academy of the Holy Angels senior Renata Francesca, who is from Ridgewood, was awarded the Margaret E. Klett Literary Scholarship. The Klett scholarship was established in 1999 by Mr. and Mrs. Donald Pakosh in memory of Mrs. Pakosh’s mother, Margaret E. Klett. Conferred annually in October, this award recognizes excellence in writing and is open to seniors who maintain a minimum average in English of 93 and 87 overall, and who contribute to any of Holy Angels’ literary publications. Applicants are required write an essay based on the theme for the school year and how they see it lived out at Holy Angels. This year’s theme at Holy Angels is “Live more simply, responsibly and sustainably because. . . love cannot wait.” In her essay, Renata focused in particular on the idea that “love cannot wait”, which was taken from the writings of Blessed Theresa Gerhardinger who founded the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1833. Renata reflected, “The idea that love cannot wait is nothing new to Holy Angels. As a community, we have embraced these words of Blessed Theresa long before we declared them as our theme for the year. The girls I have met here at Holy Angels are more than just smart - they are compassionate, genuine, wholesome, well-rounded individuals who are driven not only to succeed but to help others. The bond of love that unites us runs deep, holding us together as we hold each other up.”
