Local Students Help Philadelphia District Prepare for New School Year

Demarest, NJ: In just three days, a team of juniors from the Academy of the Holy Angels helped the staff at Saint Peter the Apostle School in Philadelphia prepare for the new academic year.

Elizabeth Kim of Fort Lee, Meredith Joseph of Suffern (New York), Nora Pav of Westwood, and Cassandra Sy of Bergenfield spent their days unpacking boxes, setting up classrooms, and decorating bulletin boards for their younger counterparts in pre-K through Grade 8.

“You have no idea how much you have helped us,” Principal Rose Federicci, SSND, and her staff repeatedly told their helpers.

Although groups of volunteers from AHA have been working with Sister Rose since 2011, this year’s setup project included an additional challenge. S. Rose noted that a renovation project at the nearby Shrine of Saint John Neumann necessitated the relocation of several classrooms. As a result, the teachers at Saint Peter’s evaluated all of their materials, discarded items they no longer need, and moved everything from one floor of the school to other locations within the building.

The cooperative relationship between the two schools includes an annual Saint Nicholas Day celebration held at the school in Philadelphia, and a Field Day for Saint Peter’s students hosted at AHA’s campus in Demarest. Students from Saint Peter’s also visit AHA to take in the spring musical.

Before the Angels returned to their homes in New Jersey and New York, Saint Peter’s presented them with a guardian angel statue that will be given a place of honor at AHA.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
