Our Lady of Guadalupe Image Dedicated in Educator’s Memory

Demarest, NJ: The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe now graces the Kelleher Hall Chapel at the Academy of the Holy Angels. The artwork was purchased and dedicated in memory of AHA educator and alumna Karen Sullivan Camporeale, who lost her battle with cancer in the spring.

“Karen had a great devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe, so we have installed a painting of Our Lady as a gift of the AHA faculty and staff that was dedicated in Karen’s memory,” said AHA President Melinda Hanlon.

Members of the AHA community and Camporeale’s family attended the brief ceremony held after the weekday Mass on December 12th, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Catholics celebrate this anniversary of the day in 1531 when Juan Diego, a villager living near Mexico City, convinced the bishop of Mexico to build a chapel at Tepeyac, where Juan had seen a vision of Mary dressed as an Aztec princess. Mary had appeared to Juan on December 9th, but Bishop Juan de Zumarraga asked Juan Diego to bring him a sign. Mary then presented Juan Diego with roses to bring to the bishop. On December 12th, as Juan Diego opened his cactus fiber cloak in front of the bishop, the roses he had been carrying fell to the ground. On the interior of the cloak, the bishop saw an image of Mary as she had appeared at Tepeyac.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
