Saint Nicholas Day Event Reinforces Bond between Schools

Demarest, NJ: December 6th, the Feast of Saint Nicholas, is a special day at Saint Peter the Apostle School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Each year, members of that school’s community open their doors to members of the Academy of the Holy Angels Student Council, who bring Christmas gifts and share in seasonal activities.

While many schools are rivals in terms of sports and academics, these two schools have a special bond, since both institutions were founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. Shared activities include a field day for Saint Peter’s children that is held on the AHA campus, and an ongoing summer service program in which AHA students help Principal Sister Rose Federicci, SSND, set up the school for the new academic year. Saint Peter’s students have also attended AHA’s award-winning musicals.

Holy Angels students who participated in this year’s celebration included Catherine Bagin of Glen Ridge, Nicola Callegari of Upper Saddle River, Megan Czvekus of River Edge, Samantha Danylchuk and Sydney Loverich of Mahwah, Ashley Hess of Cedar Grove, Hannah Hyams of Kearny, Olivia Mandella of Montvale, Madelyn Menapace of Hawthorne, Tatiana Mesrobian of Englewood Cliffs, Samantha Romano and Emily Yang of Old Tappan, Caroline Staff and Emilie Thomas of Oradell, and Melina Tidwell-Torres of North Arlington.

When the AHA students were about to return to New Jersey, the children wished them a safe trip by singing the Blessing of Mother Theresa Gerhardinger, foundress of the School Sisters of Notre Dame.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
