Saint Nicholas Day Event Unites Students from Philadelphia, Demarest

Demarest, NJ: Holiday celebrations include many cherished traditions that unite people of all ages. This month, 10 seniors from the Academy of the Holy Angels continued the school’s tradition of marking Saint Nicholas Day with students from Saint Peter the Apostle School in Philadelphia.

AHA Student Council members who made the trip included Samantha Sivulka of Englewood Cliffs, Kyra Cseh of Ramsey, Courtney Dodds of Cresskill, Rhiannon Novelli of Waldwick, Veronique Dhont of Englewood, Caterina Bombarda of Rutherford, Isabella Cho of Demarest, Margeaux Gould of Weehawken, Emily Halloran of Congers (NY), and Anya Skae of Nanuet (NY).

The Holy Angels students brought gifts for each of their young friends at Saint Peter’s, helped the children decorate gingerbread cookies, and enjoyed being in each other’s company.

As the Angels and chaperones Brianna Portuesi and Stephanie Dowling prepared to leave Philadelphia, the Saint Peter’s students sent them off with the Blessing of Mother Theresa Gerhardinger, foundress of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, AHA’s founders and sponsors.

This annual visit is part of the shared ministry between the two schools. AHA hosts field days for students from Saint Peter’s, and AHA volunteers regularly travel to Philadelphia to help Principal S. Rose Federicci prepare for each new academic year.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
