School Community Encouraged to Fulfill Teen’s Christmas Wish

Demarest, NJ:When Victoria Rocker spotted a social media post about Maddox Hyde, a terminally ill teen from Pennsylvania, she quickly decided to help fulfill his wish to receive as many Christmas cards as possible. Rocker, a sophomore at the Academy of the Holy Angels, started spreading the news at school, and set to work collecting cards and letters.

Rocker explained that she was moved to lend a hand because a member of her immediate family battled breast cancer in 2007.

“I understood firsthand the toll it takes, not only on the patient, but on their loved ones as well,” the Cliffside Park resident said.

Hyde has been struggling with neuroblastoma. His family recently decided that withholding additional treatments would be best for him.

“I want to go into the medical field, so I researched neuroblastoma,” Rocker added. “The amount of pain he must be in is unbearable. I really just wanted to make his last few weeks a little easier. I thought writing Maddox and his family letters would be a great way to kick off this season of service and giving.”

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
