Sister Nonna Dunphy Scholarship Finalists & Semi-finalists Honored

Demarest, NJ: The Academy of the Holy Angels honored the 2017-18 Sister Nonna Dunphy Scholarship finalists and semi-finalists during the October 27th Foundation Day celebration. Each year, two seniors, two juniors, and two sophomores receive these $1,000 awards based on academic achievement, leadership, character, service, and an interview conducted by the Scholarship Committee.

This year’s scholarship recipients are seniors Mary Haws of River Vale and Laura Pesanello of Mahwah, juniors Hanora Chapman of Ramsey and Timea Papp of Hawthorne, and sophomores Sophia Luongo of Upper Saddle River and Kathryn McGraw of Blauvelt (NY).
The semi-finalists are seniors Elizabeth Abraham of West Nyack (NY) and Aprile Bertomo of Bergenfield; juniors Ashley Hess of Cedar Grove, Mary Macri of Oradell, Olivia Mandella of Montvale, and Maya Sharma of River Vale; and sophomores Sophie Anderson of Mahwah, Amy Cami of Demarest, and Grace McGraw of Blauvelt (NY).

The AHA Board of Trustees established this scholarship in honor of the Academy’s foundress during the 1990-91 academic year, when AHA was celebrating the 25th anniversary of the school’s move to Demarest.

Sister Nonna Dunphy, a member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, was born in Ireland in 1840 and died in Fort Lee, New Jersey, in 1931. On October 2, 1879, when she and Sister Cyrilla Geifel signed the contract for the Fort Lee property that was the school’s original location, Sister Nonna reportedly had just $20 in her pocket.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in New Jersey. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
