Spring Open House Offers Highlights of Life at Holy Angels

Demarest, NJ: On April 10th, the Academy of the Holy Angels rolled out the red carpet for a sizeable group of prospective students and their families. In just a few hours, this Spring Open House provided an information-packed look at life at Holy Angels.

Members of AHA’s Angelbots and Anjoules robotics teams operated some of their creations, including a robot carrying a sign that welcomed everyone to the event. Student vocalists and instrumental musicians flooded the entrance with joyful sounds, and works by selected senior artists provided an exquisite backdrop for the featured speakers. Visitors were also treated to a performance by the four-time national champion AHA Varsity Dance Team.

AHA President Melinda Hanlon provided a warm welcome to everyone in attendance, and AHA Principal Jean Miller, an Academy alumna, highlighted the school’s many positive attributes. In addition to offering outstanding academic courses, the Academy also hosts over 90 clubs and activities, and regular liturgies and retreats. AHA is known for fostering reliable and resilient young leaders, many of whom attend top-tier colleges and universities. Miller added that Holy Angels also focuses on encouraging young women to develop into life-long learners who are competent, ethical, and successful members of the global community.

Although AHA is a Catholic school, Miller noted Holy Angels is pleased to welcome students from a variety of religious and cultural backgrounds.

“We are inclusive,” she stated.

Miller added that AHA is the only private school in the area with a unique connection to the United Nations. The School Sisters of Notre Dame, AHA’s founders and sponsors, have non-governmental organization status, which allows AHA faculty members and students entrée to many UN-sponsored events.

AHA also provides opportunities for international travel for students who wish to study abroad and pursue service opportunities in other countries.

Senior Melina Tidwell Torres, a member AHA’s Operation Smile group and celebrated dance team, shared details about her recent Op Smile mission trip to China and her plans to pursue a pre-med track as a college student.

Alexa Watson provided a freshman’s perspective on AHA as she discussed her decision to attend Holy Angels and her recent contributions to the school’s volleyball team.

AHA Admissions Director Michèle McGovern delivered a brief address, and asked Angel Ambassadors to escort groups of visitors on tours of the labs, classrooms, Learning Commons, and auditorium. Every stop on the tour showcased AHA’s educational opportunities, clubs and activities, and logistical details regarding busing and finance.

Young women who would like to learn more about the Academy of the Holy Angels are encouraged to become an Angel for the Day. Sneak Peek opportunities are also available. Please visit for additional information.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
