Student Musicians Perform at SSND Event in Connecticut

Demarest, NJ: Student musicians from the Academy of the Holy Angels carried on their tradition of performing at the School Sisters of Notre Dame’s Donor Recognition Luncheon. This annual event is held in Wilton, Connecticut. Each year, the performers receive a warm welcome from the SSNDs, who are AHA’s foundresses and sponsors.

AHA Instrumental Music Director Mariann Annecchino invited pianist Mary Quimbo of Woodcliff Lake; violinist Faith Youn and cellist Cecilia Yun, both of Closter; and flutist Celine Hong of Englewood Cliffs.

“It was a delightful day well spent,” Annecchino said. “We were recognized as being representatives of the fruit of an SSND education.”

Youn, Yun, and Hong played as a trio. All of these performers are freshmen at Holy Angels. They presented works by Haydn and Pachelbel and some contemporary selections.

Quimbo, a member of the Class of 2021, played solo. She performed tunes from “The Sound of Music,” including “Climb Every Mountain.” Quimbo also played “The Girl from Ipanema,” and classics by Chopin and other composers.

In April 2019, Quimbo was inducted into AHA’s chapter of Tri-M, formally known as Modern Music Masters. Sponsored by the National Association for Music Educators, Tri-M recognizes young musicians and focuses on creating future leaders in music education and advocacy.

Annecchino, who is adviser to Tri-M Chapter 2150, encourages society members to actively promote music at the Academy and within the greater community.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
