Students’ Accomplishments Highlighted at STEM Expo

Demarest, NJ: Kym McGowan and Suha Patel represented the Academy of the Holy Angels at the Archdiocese of Newark’s STEM Expo. The event showcased students’ achievements in science, technology, engineering, and math.

McGowan, a senior from Clifton, participated in a student panel. She shared her experience as an engineering student at Holy Angels, and demonstrated her compelling “Dancing LED” project to hundreds of New Jersey’s middle school students. Her work exemplifies how engineers can control LEDs to pulse in time.

A member of the Class of 2019, McGowan shared that she plans to study aerospace engineering as a college student. She decided to meld her interest in becoming an astronaut with her enjoyment of discovering how things work. McGowan urged students to speak up and share their questions and thoughts with others.

Robotics aficionado Suha Patel of Fort Lee discussed her work as co-captain of the Anjoules, AHA’s junior varsity robotics team. This member of AHA’s sophomore class also demonstrated her team’s robot for enthusiastic expo attendees. Earlier this year, the Anjoules competed in their initial FIRST® Tech Challenge. The team finished second in the “three-team alliance.”

“They both did a great job in showing off AHA’s STREAM program,” Holy Angels math and engineering teacher Jing Loo said of Patel and McGowan.

Holy Angels offers a STREAM curriculum, which infuses STEM with religion and art.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
