Teen Violinist Competes in Germany

Demarest, NJ: The gift of a toy violin has made a tremendous difference in the life of Cresskill resident Nayoun Kim. For the last nine years, this Academy of the Holy Angels sophomore has been playing a full-sized violin with orchestras around the world. This fall, she joined musicians from 19 countries in the Louis Spohr International Violin Competition in Weimar, Germany.

The event in Germany was Kim’s first international competition, and included an unexpected challenge. While practicing the night before she was due to compete, Kim dropped her violin bow, which cracked. She recovered by purchasing a new bow just hours before performing as the first player.

Kim’s talent and resilience are helping her build a reputation as a world-class violinist and competitor. She currently studies with Li Lin from the Juilliard Pre-college Division and AHA Instrumental Music Teacher Mariann Annecchino.

“It’s an absolute delight to work with Nayoun, and I am thrilled that Nayoun plays with us in our program and shares her gifts with us,” Annecchino said. “She has an extremely busy schedule, but she makes time to be an active member of our Academy Orchestra and Select String Ensemble.”

Most recently, Kim won the Juilliard Pre-college Tzigane Competition, and performed at the opening ceremony for the Young Tchaikovsky International Violin Competition. She was also a finalist in From the Top.

“I wanted to play violin since I was young,” Kim said. Her mother’s gift of a toy violin led her to play an actual violin, which is now her instrument of choice. “I played the piano for 10 years,” she explained. “It was hard to decide which instrument to play as a major.”

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
