Teens Evaluate STEM Fair Projects

Demarest, NJ: Eleven teen scientists from the Academy of the Holy Angels in Demarest put their knowledge to the test when they agreed to judge this winter’s STEM Fair at the Academy of Our Lady in Glen Rock.

AHA’s team of judges included Briana Gangl of Verona, Sofia Rodriguez of Ringwood, Gina Buonauro of Fair Lawn, Anya Skae of Nanuet (NY), Tara Lyons of Pearl River (NY), Willa Spaar of River Vale, Daniella Macri of Fort Lee, Alexandra Lisanti of Lyndhurst, Véronique Dhont of Englewood, Hannah Hyams of Kearny, and Kelly Sim of Edgewater. As soon as they arrived in Glen Rock, the teens went to work, listening carefully to the middle school students’ descriptions of their projects, and asking probing questions. In all, the judges evaluated 26 group presentations.

Once they completed their assessments of the entries, the judges convened with STEM Fair Coordinator Doris Treuer and Michele Meli, both of whom teach science at the Academy of Our Lady. The judges discussed their findings with both educators and made recommendations for future events.

“Our girls did a great job at the Academy of Our Lady STEM Fair. I am so proud of them,” said Holy Angels math and engineering teacher Jing Loo, who recommended this year’s team. Loo also heads the AHA Robotics Club.

STEM incorporates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The STREAM curriculum for which Holy Angels is known also integrates religion and the arts.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
