Teens Experiment with Medical & Engineering Careers

Demarest, NJ: Selected female high school students recently spent a day at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, where they experimented with careers in medicine and engineering. Academy of the Holy Angels juniors who were invited to attended the Perry Outreach Program include Ariana Layne of Upper Saddle River; Brigid Miller and Dylan Vonderhorst of Pearl River, New York; Alana Pomponio of Nutley; and Emma DeMarco of South Nyack, New York.

Organized by the Perry Initiative, the Perry Outreach is a one-day event held at multiple locations throughout the nation each year. The program strives to create a conduit for women to enter engineering and medical professions, including orthopedics. Students hear presentations by women leaders in these fields and perform hands-on biomechanics experiments and mock surgeries. Holy Angels sophomores, juniors, and seniors apply via the AHA Office of Academic & College Counseling.

“We were lucky enough to learn a few basic medical procedures that dealt with orthopedic surgery and engineering,” Alana Pomponio reported. “We practiced suturing, putting on a cast, and using different drills to put screws into bones made of sawdust. Overall, this experience has given me insight to what orthopedic surgeons do every day and how they help people recover from serious injuries.”

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
