Top-ranked Skier Gathers Momentum in Regional Event

Demarest, NJ: This season, Sydney Loverich of Mahwah emerged as New Jersey’s #1 skier in the United States Ski and Snowboard Association/New Jersey Ski Racing Association’s U19 division, and qualified for the Eastern Region Finals held at New York’s Gore Mountain. The regional event included top-ranked skiers from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Connecticut.

“I participated in the giant slalom and slalom races this year, and I placed in both. I placed fifth in the giant slalom and tenth in the slalom,” Loverich reported, adding that this was the best competition of her career.

Loverich was just five years old when she first put on a pair of skis. She started racing at the age of nine, and soon began participating in state-level competitions in Vermont. When Loverich moved from Vermont to New Jersey two years ago, she became affiliated with the New Jersey Ski Racing Association, the United States Ski and Snowboard Association’s official amateur alpine competition organization. She currently races out of Mount Peter in Warwick, New York.

This seasoned competitor is a member of the Class of 2019 at the Academy of the Holy Angels in Demarest. During her sophomore year, she was named to the 2017 New Jersey State Team by the NJSRA, Alpine Division, and competed in the USSA U16 Eastern Championship and the Canadian/American Competition.

She describes skiing as her true passion.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
