DEMAREST, NJ — AHA seniors Patricia Krisan and Claudia Morgan have been appointed to serve on the Bergen County Commission on the Status of Women by Bergen County’s Board of Chosen Freeholders. The students will serve for a one-year term from September 2015 to June 2016.

The girls were selected from dozens of students nominated by the county’s public, private and parochial schools based upon their academic excellence and leadership qualities.

The Bergen County Commission on the Status of Women (COSW) was founded in 1975 and serves as a bridge between government and community, studying the needs  of women and promoting the experience  of women’s rights  in such areas as domestic violence, childcare, and elder care.  The Junior Commission was established in 2000 to offer young women the opportunity to become involved with in these areas and with other issues concerning
women’s social welfare.

According to Bergen County Executive James Tedesco,  as  part of the Junior Commissioners’ participation in the Commission on the Status of Women,
girls will  be invited to select special community service projects and may elect to publish peer-relevant research on key issues.

This initiative supports the teaching of AHA, promoting  service learning and advancing social concerns protecting women’s rights.

For  more than 136 years,  the Academy of the Holy Angels, sponsored by  The School Sisters of Notre Dame, has been educating  young women from all religious backgrounds in a rigorous, college-preparatory program.  Located on a college-like campus,  AHA is a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence and a National  Service Learning Leader School that empowers young women to lead in academics,  arts,  athletics, spirituality, and service.  For more information, visit www.holyangels.org.
