Writers Amass Awards for Poetry, Short Stories, Humor Pieces

Demarest, NJ: Three student writers from the Academy of the Holy Angels have earned honors in the regional level Scholastic Art and Writing Competition.

Kirsten Garino’s humor pieces netted two awards, including a Gold Key for “FAQ” and an Honorable Mention for “The Paleo Problem.” Her Gold Key award has “unlocked” her opportunity to continue on to the national level of the writing competition. Garino, who resides in Oradell, is a member of the Class of 2019. She studies English with Nadine Behrens.

AHA junior Mary Petito of North Bergen received two Silver Keys for her poetry. Her award-winning entries are entitled “The 3” and “What Do You Know?” Petito is a student in Sean Hickey’s English class.

River Vale resident Irene Kim garnered two Honorable Mentions for her short stories entitled “Once Upon a Night” and “The Hunt.” Kim is a member of the Class of 2020 and studies with AHA English Department Chair Nancy Schneberger.

“I'm very happy that students make the effort to submit their work,” Schneberger stated. “We have many talented writers at AHA, and they deserve recognition! I hope that this success encourages them to submit their work for publication or to other writing contests.”

The Scholastic Art and Writing Competition was launched in 1923 to honor teen writers and artists throughout the United States. Medalists from previous years have included Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Lena Dunham, and Paul Chan.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
