Holy Angels Students Serve on Youth Court
May, 2015
Four Academy of the Holy Angels students recently graduated from the Orangetown Youth Court Program. Mairead Dillon, Kylie Gilbride, Charlotte McCabe and Samantha Ryan participated in the six month law-related education training program in which selected youth of Orangetown take on courtroom roles, such as judge, defense attorney and prosecutor, in real life cases regarding their fellow youth of the community who violate the law. During their training they studied the criminal justice system, court terminology and learned about the functions of the Youth Court. The program concluded with mock hearings aimed at preparing them for their participation in actual Youth Court proceedings. Members of the Youth Court are charged adjudicating cases involving their peers from the town of Orangeburg. Kylie Gillbride commented, “Going forward as a newly initiated member of the Orangetown Youth Court, I will have the privilege and responsibility of representing respondents and/or the town of Orangetown in a dignified manner.” She added that maintaining confidentiality about the parties involved will always be a high priority for her in her service on the court.
