AHA + STEM
“My interest in science, particularly chemistry, was sparked during my sophomore year by my chemistry teacher, Mrs. Brizzolara. She made chemistry exciting because she shared her work experiences with us and was constantly connecting chemistry to the ‘real world.’ However, the commitment that AHA has to science can better exemplified by the administration’s agreement to allow Organic Chemistry to be taught to a group of six interested students in 2008 and I was one of them. After completing AP Chemistry during my junior year, I was offered the unique opportunity to take an introductory Organic Chemistry course during my senior year. Organic chemistry is typically a second year college-level course taken by most science majors and all pre-med students, and it is extraordinarily uncommon for it to be offered at the high school level! It was this course that inspired and gave me the confidence to major in chemistry as an undergraduate at Cornell University. Without Holy Angels and Mrs. Brizzolara’s influence, I definitely would not be pursuing a PhD in Organic Chemistry at the University of Oxford.”
ADVICE FOR FUTURE ANGELS…
“What I find most exciting about AHA’s science program is the breadth of options offered. Beyond biology, chemistry, and physics, AHA offers its students AP courses well as upper level electives such as Anatomy and Physiology, Organic Chemistry, and Environmental Science. Since the faculty is open to student initiative and suggestions, I am sure that AHA will continue to find a way to help students study and engage in whatever branch of science they are interested in pursuing!”
