Athena’s AHA experience is about pushing beyond former expectations and perceived limitations as she prepares for a successful future. This Angel is involved in numerous activities on campus, and still manages to work, volunteer, and maintain an excellent grade point average in her Advanced Placement and high honors classes. At the start of her senior year, she was selected to participate in the National Hispanic Recognition Program and became a commissioned Eucharistic Minister. Athena earned two Silver Medals for her performance on the National Spanish Exam, and is a member of Mu Alpha Theta (the Math National Honor Society). Her many honors include winning a Johns Hopkins Book Award and being named an AP Scholar. She was captain of her freshman basketball team at AHA, and keeps her skills sharp by playing with an outside group in the off season. Her numerous activities include involvement with Habitat for Humanity, Campus Ministry, Angels Anatomy, Angels Enable, Girl Rising, Angels for Life, Angels for Veterans, Powerback, Big Sister/Little Sister, and the Special Needs Awareness Program. Athena is a peer tutor in math and science, and serves as president of Angels over Africa and vice president for Project Greenhouse. Athena was recently part of a service trip to the Dominican Republic, where she helped build houses and worked on a sanitation project. She also volunteers at a food pantry, a local church, and the Marian Shrine. During the summer, she shadows pediatric and surgical professionals. She has been accepted to the Englewood Hospital Surgical Program.

“I think my time at AHA has helped me reach my full potential. It has constantly pushed me to my limits and helped me realize I can handle more than I think. It has really empowered me to do things I never would have imagined myself being capable of doing and has really kept me on track for the future. I think going to AHA has put me at an advantage as I’ve been prepped for the future since the day I walked through the doors. I’ve learned many important life lessons in and out of the classrooms and many important skills that I will take with me for the rest of my life. Through the rigorous school years, I have built many bonds with people and have met so many people with different life experiences that have helped shaped my characteristics in ways that are unexpected.”
