Since her freshman year, Gabriela has been building solid relationships at Holy Angels and beyond. This summer, she and several other AHA students traveled to Puerto Rico to help residents recover from the far-reaching effects of Hurricane Maria. Together, she and her team demolished damaged homes and helped restore a farm that had been destroyed by the storm. When she returned to New Jersey, Gabriela joined the leadership board of Fiesta4Hope, an AHA student-led non-profit organization that has developed ties to continue to support a community center in Aibonito, Puerto Rico. Within the AHA community, Gabriela is an officer of AHA’s Black and Hispanic Cultural Society, and has been active with Model UN, Art Club, Journey Toward Justice, and Powerback. She served as captain of the AHA Freshman Basketball Team and is now captain of the AHA JV Volleyball Team. Gabriela contributed to the school’s successful 2018 musical as a member of the stage crew. As a member of AHA’s Operation Smile organization, Gabriela helps plan and run fundraisers to cover the cost of corrective operations for children born with cleft lip or palate. She has been invited to join the National Society of High School Scholars. In her community, Gabriela volunteers at the Saint John the Baptist Parish Center. She is a CPR certified babysitter and assists parents with their children during Mass.

“The friends you make here, the relationships you build with your teachers, and the memories you make are unlike anything else I've ever experienced. When you come to AHA, you are greeted with the warmest faces and, even on your worst days, there are always 20+ hands ready to pick you back up. My favorite thing about AHA is that the teachers don't just teach; they engage with us. Every teacher I've had makes the material relate to us; they make sure we aren't just memorizing, but understanding. I come to school with an open mind, excited to learn and I'm so happy I get to do it at AHA.”
