Meet Katie '20

It was no surprise that Katie won the Brandeis Book Award for Social Action and Civic Engagement. She was a frontrunner for this honor, which is given to those who demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to bettering the community through social action and volunteerism. Katie recently studied social justice and public policy at Georgetown. She was also an intern for Kim Guadagno’s gubernatorial campaign and took part in the 2019 Model Congress.

Katie expresses her views as the AHA Voice’s political columnist. Currently, she is president of the AHA Model United Nations, where she has earned multiple commendations for her work at the Dalton Conference and the Bergen Tech Conference. Her formidable verbal skills led to an undefeated year on the AHA Debate Team. As team co-captain, she helped AHA’s debaters finish second in Bergen County. Her service work includes fundraising for tornado victims, volunteering at a senior citizens’ residence, tutoring her peers, and performing in Night of Future Broadway Stars to benefit Covenant House. Katie sings with the AHA Concert Choir and the select, a cappella Vocal Ensemble. She shared her “growth mindset” attitude toward education as a panelist at AHA’s Middle States Colloquium, the culmination of the Academy’s self-evaluation. She enjoys membership in the National Honor Society, the National Math Honor Society, and the National Spanish Honor Society, and earned AHA’s Sister Mary Nonna Dunphy Scholarship. She finished first in the American Math Competition, and received gold medals on two consecutive national Spanish exams. She maintains a stellar GPA while pursuing multiple AP courses. Outside of school, she backpacks and cycles with a group based in New England.
