Musically-inclined Maria gave AHA concert-goers an unexpected treat when she traded her violin for the baton, and conducted the AHA Orchestra as they premiered her original composition, “Serenitree.” Maria is co-concertmaster of the orchestra and serves on its executive board. She is also president of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, and participates in Tri-M outreach concerts. She earned that group’s Outstanding Service Award for investing many volunteer hours. In addition to playing violin and viola for the AHA String Quartet and several other groups, she is involved with the AHA Handbell Choir and the Music Makers, a group that performs at liturgies. This accomplished vocalist sings with the AHA Concert Choir and the AHA Vocal Ensemble. She was named to the All-County Chorus and the Carnegie Hall Honors Program Chorus. In addition to her studies at AHA, Maria pursues piano, violin, viola, composition, and music theory at the Thurnauer School of Music. Now in her senior year, Maria is taking the Advanced Placement music theory exam on her own. Maria, who is originally from Spain, is fluent in Spanish and English. Her work learning the French language also earned her membership in the French National Honor Society. Her many interests include competitive horseback riding and show jumping, which she has pursued since she was six. She is a member of the Royal Spanish Equestrian Federation, and, when she visits Spain, Maria volunteers as an equine therapist and at an equestrian summer camp. She founded AHA’s International Children’s Aid Club, and is involved with the Special Needs Awareness Program, Angels Anatomy, and ScoliAngels, a group that raises funds for children with spinal disorders. Maria is also a peer tutor and an award-winning Debate Club judge.

“Whatever you have your heart set on, from performing on Broadway to becoming a doctor, AHA is your place. Ever since I've been here, I've grown so much, musically and academically. AHA has offered me so many new opportunities, like composing and conducting my own piece for the AHA Orchestra. AHA is the best school someone could be in.”
