The Angels Tennis team is definitely one of the powerhouses of Bergen County.  A seasoned team will be returning in the fall and we are continually bringing in new, young talent.  This is a program dedicated to the development of every player regardless of their skill level.  Centered around a strong and growing sense of team camaraderie and having the deepest desire to succeed, we are constantly raising the bar, proving just how rewarding it is to be a member of such a unique high school tennis experience here at Holy Angels.

Year in Review

The 2018 tennis season was a very exciting one for our Angels! Our line-up was composed of 5 seniors, 1 junior, 1 sophomore and 2 freshmen. Going into the season, we were the “Team to Beat” in Bergen County with #1 ranking from the Bergen Record. While we faced some challenges early in the season with establishing our line-up, our team had its best season to date with an overall record of 17-1. We posted an undefeated regular season claiming our Division Championship Title with a 6-0 record.

In the Bergen County Tournament, we advanced 4 out of 5 positions to the Finals and won the Bergen County Team Championship crown for 2018. Our 2nd singles player, Brooke Hess, won the Championship in her position.

With stellar players in both of our #1 singles and #1 doubles positions, they qualified for NJ State Individual Tournament as seeded players. This allowed our undefeated #2 singles and #2 doubles to play in the tournament as well. All of our girls held their seeds and had a very memorable tournament. Our first singles player, Ashley Hess (#2/128 State seed) advanced to the Tournament Final where she dropped her third set to rival opponent from Paramus Catholic and was the NJ State Finalist for her 2nd year in a row.

In the Team State Tournament, we were the #1 seed in the Non-Public North A Section. In a tough match vs. reigning Champs, Kent Place, we took back our Sectional Championship Title. We played against South A Champs, Pingry, in the Group Final and won 3-2 in an exciting 3rd set 2nd singles match.

Earning the #2 seed in the State Tournament of Champions, we faced off against Holmdel in the Semi-Finals and ended our run with a 2-3 loss. It was the furthest any AHA team has ever gone.

We had an incredible season with lots to take away. It leaves the door wide open for next year and we are in great position to continue the legacy of the program.

In addition to the team accolades, each girl received additional honors that included four 1st Team-All Division awards for 1st and 2nd singles and 1st and 2nd doubles, a 1st Team All-County for 1st singles, 2nd Team All-County for 1st doubles, 3rd Team All-State for 2nd singles, 2nd Team All-State Non-Public for 1st doubles, and 1st Team All-State for 1st singles. This year’s MVP awards went to Brooke Hess (9) and Ashley Hess (12) and the Coach’s Award went to Isabella Darmanin.

The girls met their success this year with a grateful heart and determined spirit. They have continued to grow our program and bring positive reflections on our school.
