Holy Angels Takes Action to Help Puerto Rico’s Recovery

Demarest, NJ: Although the fundraisers have ended and a $7,042 Hurricane Maria relief check was sent off months ago, the Academy of the Holy Angels never put the people of Puerto Rico out of their minds. After school ended for the year, an industrious group of AHA teens and chaperones took a service trip to the island, where they demolished storm-ravaged buildings and helped restore a farm where many crops had been destroyed.

AHA President Will Lead Board of Sister Rose Thering Fund

Demarest, NJ: On July 1st, Academy of the Holy Angels President Melinda Hanlon will become chair of the board of the Sister Rose Thering Fund for Education in Jewish-Christian Studies. Based at Seton Hall University in South Orange, the SRTF promotes understanding and cooperation among people from diverse religious backgrounds. The organization raises funds that permit educators to pursue Jewish-Christian studies at Seton Hall, and recognizes humanitarians who strive to improve interfaith relations.

Gifted Vocalist to Study at Manhattan School of Music

Demarest, NJ: Juliana Dominguez, an aspiring professional soprano from North Bergen, is so devoted to her craft that she will soon spend her Saturdays in an intensive course at the Manhattan School of Music. This rising sophomore at the Academy of the Holy Angels will receive classical voice training from Amy Williams and other teachers from MSM’s Precollege Division program for gifted teens.

Bergen County Woman Sleeps Outdoors to Support Covenant House

Demarest, NJ: Academy of the Holy Angels English Department Chair Nancy Schneberger recently joined forces with 94 women who slept in a Newark parking lot to raise funds for Covenant House. “There were eight women in our group,” Schneberger said of the local contingent from Trinity Episcopal Church in Allendale. “The woman who invited me to join is going to be 80 years old. I thought that if she could do this, so could I!”

Top Scholars Named to Principal’s List & Honor Roll

Demarest, NJ: Multiple students from the Academy of the Holy Angels were honored for maintaining excellent averages throughout the 2017-18 academic year. Those who finished the year with a grade point average of 95 or higher were named to the Principal’s List. Students with an average of 90 to 94 were named to the Honor Roll.

AHA Welcomed into New Jersey Association of Independent Schools

Demarest, NJ: The Academy of the Holy Angels has been admitted to the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools. Acceptance followed an extensive review of the Academy’s mission, program, policies, and facilities. The application process also included meetings with NJAIS representatives and the members of the AHA Board of Trustees, parents, students, faculty members, and administrators.

Newly-minted Holy Angels Alumna Earns Gold Award

Demarest, NJ: In the space of a few weeks, Sara Zilvetti graduated from the Academy of the Holy Angels and entered an exclusive sorority when she received her Girl Scout Gold Award. Zilvetti, a member of Glen Rock Girl Scout Troop 60284, is now among the 5.4% of eligible Girl Scouts who receive this top honor.

Senior Honored by American Association of Teachers of French

Demarest, NJ: Palak Hazrati has received a 2018 Outstanding Senior in French Award from the American Association of Teachers of French. Since 2003, the AATF has presented this award to a graduating senior who demonstrates excellence in the study of French and an exceptional commitment to the French language and the many cultures where it is spoken.

Twins Share Award for Contributions to AHA’s Athletic Programs

Demarest, NJ: By their very nature, twins are destined to share a great deal with each other, so it seems fitting that twin athletes Jennifer and Caroline McGann of Old Tappan should be the joint winners the 2018 Angel Award. The Academy of the Holy Angels presents this top honor to athletes who have made outstanding contributions to the Academy’s athletic programs. Recipients of this prestigious award must be varsity athletes in a minimum of two sports, and must demonstrate dedication, spirit, and leadership during their four-year athletic careers at Holy Angels.

Student Attends Forum on Women’s Power & Influence

Demarest, NJ: It seems that everywhere Daniella Hernandez goes, she hears that women can change the world. She hears this message at her school, the Academy of the Holy Angels, and had it reinforced at both the 2017 Eleanor Roosevelt Girls Leadership Worldwide program and the 2018 Moves Millennial Forum in New York City. Hernandez was front and center as the Moves Forum turned the spotlight on improving women’s current and future roles in influential posts. She and her peers enjoyed a full afternoon of discussions at the SUNY Global Center hosted by the State Universities of New York and New York Moves.

Trio of Teens Recognized for Respectful and Kind Demeanors

Demarest, NJ: Three respectful, caring teens who enhance the atmosphere at the Academy of the Holy Angels have received the Sister Catherine Green Kindness Award. Olivia Martinez, a freshman from Paramus; Samantha Hess, a sophomore from Nutley; and Olivia Hagopian, a junior from Oradell, were recognized for their exceptional demeanors and their ability to inspire others.

Writers Share Their Craft at 20th Annual Poetry & Prose Reading

Demarest, NJ: Faith, love, stress, and the glory of bread shared by children in their Mexican grandmother’s kitchen were a few of the topics highlighted at the Academy of the Holy Angels’ 20th Annual Poetry & Prose Reading. Multiple students generously shared their work, which demonstrated their distinct voices. Nancy Schneberger, chair of the AHA English Department, introduced her students. She commented on the remarkable miracle of language, and the importance of good writing, which ultimately becomes a bridge.

Angels from Class of 2018 Take Flight

Demarest, NJ: The first leg of a life-long journey came to a joyous culmination May 31, as 128 members of the Class of 2018 concluded their studies at the Academy of the Holy Angels. All of the graduates will now go on to share their considerable gifts at colleges and universities throughout the United States. The Angels gathered as a class one last time at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, the site of the Academy’s 138th graduation exercises.

Demarest, NJ: Art is one of the pillars of the curriculum at the Academy of the Holy Angels, where several esteemed fine and performing artists were honored at the 2018 Angels in the Arts Appreciation Dinner. Mary Haws, Jessica Boccassini, and Margeaux Gould walked away with this year’s top awards.
